I couldn’t resist sharing these two images from a quick session I shot of my own little man yesterday. It dawned on me yesterday morning that he is now sitting up and I needed to make sure and document that — more than pictures on my iPhone. :-)

This is my favorite. I think I might print it as a big canvas, I just don’t know where it will go yet.

Any of you that know me well know that I have several siblings and that my younger sister, MK, is a talented basketball player. It has been really fun to see her do so well in her basketball career. Having gone to a really small private school, her dreams of playing college ball were doubted by some– people that thought she would have to go to a larger high school for her talent to be seen. Well God had His own plan for her and she has just finished up her college career playing for Mississippi State.

I have some fun memories from her pre-college career. My senior year of high school MK was a 7th grader and we played that season together, which was fun. (Yes, she played varsity as a 7th grader). I think the funniest memory I have is the the game that the varsity guys’ team was a couple of players short for one of their games so MK and I played in the game. The rules are such that girls aren’t prohibited from playing in the guys game. My brother played on the guys team at the time, so there were 3 Goveros playing in the game at the same time and between the three of us we accounted for all of the points our team scored. Pretty funny– we all still laugh about that.

She has some pretty impressive stats and accomplishments– including breaking the sate of MS high school scoring record with a career 5000+ points and leading her team to win the State Championship her senior year. Last year she was an integral part of the Lady Bulldogs making it to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament and then this year she was one of 3 Gillom Trophy nominees. The accolades and awards go on and on, and I am super proud of her– but I am most proud of her humility in the midst of her success. She knows that her talent is a gift from God and she seeks to give him the glory.

Since her college career has come to an end, I thought it would be fun to grab a few shots of her in the locker room and gym before she left. I called this an experimental shoot because I don’t usually do much on location shooting with off camera lighting– but I decided to try something new with this shoot.

This image and the one above were shot with one speedlight shooting through an umbrella. The gym was completely dark except the little bit of ambient coming in from the ‘doors’ around the main level where you enter the stands. It was so dark that I had to have MK’s boyfriend Hunter hold his cell phone up to her face to create enough contrast so my lens could focus and then he ran out of the shot before I took the picture. Like I said– experimental.

These next two were taken in the media room where they watch game tape. The processing on these is a bit different than usual.

newest addition to the acorn family

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season! Our family had a particularly sweet time this year because right before Christmas — December 16th to be exact — our little family grew in number as we welcomed little Nolan Clifford. He arrived just after 3:30 pm on the 16th and weighed in at a solid 8 lbs 13 oz. Our chunky little man is just as sweet as can be and I have very much enjoyed having a baby around the house again. His big sister Emma has been very sweet to him when she even pays him any attention and most often refers to him as ‘our baby’ instead of calling him by name.

I am excited for this upcoming year both personally as I watch my children grow as well as for Acorn and some exciting new things planned for the studio. Many thanks to all of you that were a part of making 2010 such a great year for us and I hope you will join us in making 2011 the best year yet!

Meet our little man…

escalate…headed to california

If you are a photographer reading this, I’m sure you are aware of the oodles of workshop and conference opportunities each year in the photo industry. Seriously you could make it a full time job going to all of them. Last year one of the workshops I had the opportunity to go to was put on by Dane Sanders, Southern California wedding photographer and author of the book FastTrack Photographer. Dane’s FastTrack workshop had a huge impact on me personally as well as my business and since then Dane has become a friend and mentor and the community of people I have become a part of is incredible. Recently Dane has partnered up with several other industry leaders to put on an event in Newport Beach, California called Escalate.

I am super excited to be going to this event in May. It is a star studded line up of speakers in a venue that looks super fun and I know that I will not only learn a ton but connect with some amazing people. If I have never mentioned it I am mentioning it now— the photography industry is full of some really amazing people!

So why am I telling you all of this? Because if you are a photographer that is interested in making your business vision a reality you should really make an effort to come! Yes, I know that it is relatively short notice, yes, it is all the way in California but they are practically giving away the tickets and I am certain you won’t regret going. Hey– I am making it happen even though May is the busiest month for me this year, I have a two year old and I hate flying. :-)

true story…

Yesterday was a typical Wednesday, nothing particularly out of the ordinary other than Jon and I watching our latest Netflix arrival at 10 pm after we got home from small group–much later than we would usually start a movie. As soon as it was over we head to bed and as has become my habit right before turning off the light, I did a quick email check and read through my Twitter feed on my iPod.

As I was reading through my Twitter feed and I came to a tweet by David Jay, the founder of ShowIt, which is the website platform that my website is built on. I could go on and on about ShowIt because I really love them, and if you have ever asked me about my website you have endured me trying to convince you to go check out ShowIt because I love them that much. Anyway his tweet read: “YOU pick the winners of the Showit Best of 2009 contest! Go here and vote! http://bit.ly/aRXxyB (be warned FB polling is finicky)”

I had completely forgotten that a month or so ago they had announced that they were taking nominations for the Showit Best of 2009 contest. They were taking the nominations via Twitter and I thought ‘ah why not, I love Showit and what I have been able to create with it– I will submit my site for a couple of the categories’. That was that and I totally forgot about it. So I head on over to Facebook to check out who had made the list. I start looking through the Photographer of the Year category, scrolling through relatively quickly just to see who I recognized. I come to Dane Sanders (yay Dane!), who is my mentor/business coach and then keep going but wait a second, that looked like my site. That is my site! What?! Sure enough sandwiched between Dane Sanders and Gabriel.Ryan (another photographer whose work I love) is my site.

I am really humbled and totally shocked that I am listed in the nominations of Showit Best of 2009: Photographer of the Year. My name is listed among some of the Babe Ruth’s of the photography industry, as I had to explain to my sports loving husband. The list was chosen by other photographers, my peers. I know this is just another contest and I have no expectations of winning anything, but when I saw my name on the list I felt, for the first time, known, or at least heard of, among a sea of super talented people.

I LOVE MY HUSBAND, REALLY I DO

Ok, this is a really random post, but I laughed over this last night and thought I would share. So, last night we had put Emma down for bed and I was finishing up some things at my computer and Jon comes in and asks me what I want to do. I told him that I was almost finished at my computer and would he get the clean clothes out of the dryer and start folding them and I would come in a few minutes and help.

I finish up what I was doing and go in the living room to find this…

My oh so sweet husband was so very thoughtful and helped, not by folding the clothes, but by putting them in neat stacks so I could fold them. I mean really! Can someone please tell my why you would take the time to put clean clothes in stacks and not just fold them?!

Jon is wonderful and I love him, this is just one of those things I cannot understand– and he says I’m irrational….

AUSTIN, TEXAS + A WORKSHOP

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the FastTrack Roadshow Workshop in Austin, TX, and it was awesome! I was super excited that things worked out for me to attend. A special thanks to my in-laws for watching Emma for me for a few days. :-)

If any photographers happen to be reading this you definitely need to read the book FastTrack Photographer by Dane Sanders. It is a great book and I can now say from first hand experience (not that I doubted it before) that Dane is a super cool, genuine guy that is really committed to investing in the photography community and helping other photographers succeed. I learned so much at the workshop, made some new friends and I am really excited about the possibilities of where my business is going.

Since a post isn’t complete without images, I want to share a few of my favorites from the shoot we did at the workshop. Stephanie+Todd are getting married in November and they were so much fun to photograph!

This first image was shot in the front window of Stephanie’s store, which is right around the corner from the studio that hosted the workshop.

It started raining at the very end of the shoot, which made for some awesome images. We were all freaking out we were so excited. It’s not often that you get the sunshiny rain like that on a photo shoot.
